21 Jul Four Ways to Ingest Shatter
So you know you want to try shatter. It’s one of the most potent concentrates on the market. You can ingest up to 90% THC with just one hit! But now your question is…how do you take a hit of shatter?
Shatter doesn’t exactly look like the green herb that you know and love as marijuana, but you can ingest it in similar ways. Use this guide to learn more about experimenting with shatter, what it is, and how you can get your hands on it.
What Is Shatter?
Shatter is a concentrated form of cannabis. In order to make shatter, manufacturers use butane to extract chemical compounds from the marijuana plant. These chemical compounds include the terpenes that give your favourite strain its flavours and effects, and cannabinoids like THC. Once the extraction process is over, you are left with a waxy, dark oil. Colours and opacity will vary based on what strain was used to make shatter. Other forms of extraction (like using CO2 instead of butane) may also affect the shatter.
This process requires high heat, butane, and a whole lot of skill. While it’s possible to make your own shatter at home, you should have an outdoor space to make it. Cannabis lovers run a high risk of starting a fire by trying to make concentrates at home.
Luckily, you can buy shatter (and other types of concentrate) for experimenting. But we’ll get into that later.
Shatter is just one type of cannabis concentrate. If you are looking to experiment with concentrates, be sure to try out budders, wax, and live resin. While these products are not wildly different, cannabis lovers tend to have a personal preference.
Concentrates offer a different experience to marijuana buds. The leap from 24% THC to 80% THC is no joke. Use only small amounts of shatter, especially if it’s your first time using it. No one wants to waste a big amount of shatter only to have a rough night.
Ways to Ingest Shatter
Even buying a gram of shatter gives you a whole lot of material to work with. So how are you going to ingest your shatter?
You’ve got four different options. If you’re like us, you’ll probably try all of them before you pick a favourite.
Option #1: Dab It
Most people purchase shatter so they can dab it. It’s the easiest and most common concentrate to dab.
The dabbing process instantly vapourizes your shatter and hits you quickly. While it’s one of the hottest ways to get your cannabis fix, it’s not for beginners.
In order to dab shatter, you’ll need a dab rig. These devices kind of look like water bongs, but instead of putting your weed in a bowl, you put your concentrate on a dabber. After heating up the dab rig with a blowtorch (that’s right, we said blowtorch,) you apply the dabber and inhale the dab. Make sure you’re sitting down, because 80-90% THC can be intense.
First time dabbing? Do a little research on the ways to properly dab and the dangers of dabbing. After all, you’re using a blowtorch. YouTube tutorials can show you how to safely and properly dab with your favourite shatter.
Option #2: Twax It (Aka, Smoke Your Shatter)
Want something a little more familiar? You can add shatter to a good old-fashioned joint.
We don’t recommend smoking only shatter, of course. Too much shatter at once isn’t fun. Plus, the sticky, waxy substance will only make a mess out of your joint. A little bit of shatter can go a long way in enhancing your joints and even making them prettier.
Mixing concentrates with bud in a joint or blunt is called “twaxing.” There’s a few ways to do this. You can pinch off a bit of shatter, roll it into a thin string, and apply it on top of your bud before you roll. You can also roll shatter onto the outside of the joint. If shatter and bud isn’t enough, you can also twax the outside of your joint with shatter and roll it in kief.
Option #3: Vape It
Want to keep your shatter habit discrete? Try vaping your shatter. Vape pens are widely available both in physical stores and online. Not all vape pens are the same, however. Some vape pens are only compatible with specific cartridges, while others are designed for users to ingest flower. Shatter may be added to a cartridge (usually mixed with e-liquid) or even directly to coils depending on which product you buy. Talk to a local budtender or specialist at your favourite vape shop before you start trying to vape your shatter.
Option #4: Eat It (Aka, Make Edibles With Shatter)
You can make edibles by infusing decarbed weed into butter or oil and baking them into delicious treats. Infusing shatter into edibles is just as simple (and often, doesn’t smell as dank.)
In order to decarb your shatter, you’ll need to pop it in the oven at 250 degrees for half an hour. Make sure you put your shatter on parchment paper first! Once the decarboxylation process has activated the THC in the shatter, you can infuse it with the ingredient of your choice and bake it into your favourite baked goods.

Where to Buy Shatter
Shatter, like many concentrates, is probably not available at your local dispensary. Concentrates require specific machinery to extract THC from plants and the laws in Canada are fairly tricky regarding any form of cannabis that isn’t the plant itself.
But again, you don’t want to try and make this stuff at home.
Luckily, there are ways that you can easily access shatter and have it shipped right to your door. SpeedGreens offers two different brands of AAAA shatter – that’s the best shatter you can buy! Try out a gram or stock up with 28 grams. You can also grab mix and match deals for experimenting with different strains.
